The Trust Factor

Isn’t any relationship based on trust? And when it is your health we are talking about, it becomes imperative. A doctor and a patient have a very unusual relationship. There is something that makes us look upto them, there is no other field or occupation according to me which can demand as much respect. An appointment with the doctor and all the other appointments seem unimportant. I feel faith and trust go hand in hand when it comes to this relationship. We need to have faith in his abilities and trust him implicitly that we are in safe hands. For him to do a good job on you it is essential that you cooperate.

Sometimes we almost forget that doctors are also human beings, and that all fields have limitations. Being confident about your doctor is another important aspect. It is not always about the credentials; sometimes even a less qualified doctor can help you much more than a qualified one. A trusting relationship with a health-care provider requires that the patient feel that the doctor has a genuine interest in their well-being. As the old saying goes, "People don't care how much you know, until they know how much you care."

I personally feel it is also about being patient, the doctor as well as the patient. Listening to the patient with undivided attention, not assuming anything in between, being thorough with the checkup, and asking the right questions is what makes a ‘good doctor’. The patient in turn needs to give the doctor a chance to prove himself. Different individuals react differently to different medications, in order for your medicine to start taking its course, you need to be patient. Don’t be in a hurry, sometimes the result could be your fault. Let him help you.
